A chance reading of a newspaper ad will send 16 year old Thomas Byrne into the world within our world. Following the ad, he will find Guardians Incorporated - a seven thousand year old organization charged with protecting the balance between Magic and technology. Through their guidance, technology has kept Magic at bay since the Renaissance, but the balance is shifting and soon all those creatures we’ve driven into myth and legend will come back with a vengeance.
To protect the present, Guardians Incorporated needs to know the future, and to unlock the future they need a cypher.
Author Julian Rosado-Machain has enjoyed pizza in three continents, has a BA in Graphic Design, worked on building armored vehicles, has handcrafted alebrijes, owned a restaurant and swears that he has seen at least one ghost. A Mexico City native, he now lives in San Diego, California, and enjoys the sun with his wife, three children and cat.
Guardians Inc. The Cypher is the first book in a series that describes the creatures and powers that live in the world within our world.
Simply put? We here at Larkin’s Book Bloggers loved this story! It has great fantasy elements – a mysterious society, good guys, bad guys, and just great main characters – especially Thomas and Vice Principal “Killjoy”. So just what is a cypher and what does Thomas have to do with it? When something terrible happens to Thomas’s grandfather, the real adventure begins and we discover Thomas’s real purpose. Can he save his grandfather? Can he save the world?
And now for our guests! We are pleased to have two characters from Guardians Inc. with us for an interview!
Hello Borrowed Readers!
My name is M and I work in the Guardians Control Room in Pervagus Mansion.
Thank you Larkin Book Bloggers for allowing me to rant in your beautiful space about what we do and who we are.
Since this is a School blog I asked our own Vice Principal KiranKhanna to come and do an interview with us.
She flatly denied me first by waving her ever present metal notepad very close to my head, but I pulled some strings with the Uberboss of Guardians Inc., Doctor Franco, and now she sits with me all ready for the interview.
Kiran: This is going to cost you M.
M(whispering): We are already on Ms. Khanna.
Kiran: I know.
M: So…Okay, Um, You work as Vice Principal of Oceanic High School in Carlsbad when you’re not in Guardians Inc. How is that working out for you?
Kiran: Really M? That is your first question?
M: Well… yes.
Kiran: I have two thousand seven hundred and thirty six students to oversee, most of them haven’t realized that high school is the first step in securing their future life, some of them seem to don’t even know there is something called “Time” existing around them. They are loud, exuberant, undisciplined, carefree and some of them might be considered under-evolved humans solely by the way the act. Have you ever seen a hungry monkey eating an apple?
M: Um… You realize that this post is for a school blog right?
Kiran: Yes.
M: If I may say so Ms. Khanna, that description of your job is somewhat….or rather, uhm, seems like that your job is very stressful. Why do you continue working as a high school Vice Principal then?
Kiran: Because children are the future. So much more than finding the Book of Concord or controlling Nature or creating new technology. Children are the future, and teachers are their guiding hand. If I had to choose between Guardians Inc. and working with the children, I’d choose the children.
M: That’s a very nice thought! The children of Oceanic High must love you.
Kiran: They call me “Killjoy”.
M: Well, Uh… I guess the obligated question would be why?
Kiran: You’ll find out tomorrow at 4:45 a.m. in Martial Arts training.
M(gulps): Martial Arts? I’m a tech at Command and Control!
Kiran: You asked Doctor Franco to have me here, I asked him to have you at training…any objections?
M: Ahh, uh… no….of course not!
Kiran: Good I would hate to start our relationship with another bad note. Are we still on the School Blog?
M: Yes… yes we are! You want to close with a statement…or something?
Kiran: Yes I do. Students, the future isn’t something that “will happen someday”, the future is built by the Present, day by day, decision by decision. While you shouldn’t lose your childhood worrying about it all the time, please do think about it once in a while… and Teachers, if children are the future, you are the springboard from where they come forth.
You are heroes. Keep up the good work.
M: Wow Ms. Khanna! I couldn’t have said better myself!
Kiran: Of course you couldn’t. I’ve seen you blog, you’re barely coherent most of the time.
M: That’s ONLY BECAUSE CLICKER”S ALWAYS BEHIND ME WHEN I WRITE! It’s just too much pressure! You should see the list of things he’s given me to write about! I DIDN’T SIGN UP TO BE A BLOGGER! I’M JUST A TECH…
Kiran: M…
M: YES?… Ms. Khanna?
Kiran: We’re still on Larkin’s Blog…
M: Uh?…. Oh!… Well…Right!… So, THANK you Larkin Book Bloggers for this opportunity and with this I release this loaned blog back to its rightful owner. Thank you again and be careful out there!
(Long pause)
M: Miss Khanna, am I really that “barely coherent?”
Kiran: Don’t worry M, we’ll also work on that tomorrow at 4:45 a.m.
A huge thank you to M, Miss Khanna, and author Julian Rosado-Machain for touring with us today! You will definitely want to check out Guardians Inc. – The Cypher – and then go out and pick up book #2 in the series, Thundersword!
